On 23 January 1973, Eldfell erupted without warning, forcing the residents of Heimaey to evacuate overnight. Over the following six months, lava and ash transformed the island, destroying hundreds of homes and threatening the harbour. Today, the volcano stands as a powerful reminder of this extraordinary event. Join us to explore its history while enjoying spectacular views from the summit.

About the Tour

Discover the remarkable story of Heimaey’s volcanic past on a guided hike to the summit of Eldfell, the volcano that forever changed the island during the 1973 eruption.

This approximately 4 km hike begins in the town centre and crosses the lava fields that now cover an area where hundreds of homes once stood. As you make your way to the top of Eldfell, your guide will share fascinating stories about the eruption, the island’s history, and the powerful forces that shaped the landscape you see today.

Although most of the trail is easy to walk, the final climb to the summit is steeper, with loose volcanic gravel underfoot. The ascent takes around 30 minutes, rewarding hikers with breathtaking panoramic views over Heimaey, the surrounding islands, and the Atlantic Ocean.
